In addition, among those who received specialty substance use treatment, 377,000 received treatment at a prison or jail and 369,000 received treatment at an emergency room. The number who received treatment at a private doctor's office in 2006 was higher than the number in 2005 (422,000 vs. 254,000, respectively).
Today, it is common practice to require methadone addicts to collect their prescription from a clinic daily - and to swallow this drug while under observation. This practice had to be implemented to prevent the methadone from entering the illegal market.
The rate of binge drinking was 41.9 percent for young adults aged 18 to 25. Heavy alcohol use was reported by 15.3 percent of persons aged 18 to 25. These rates are similar to the rates in 2002, 2003, and 2004.

Among adults aged 18 or older with past year SMI in 2008, the rate of binge alcohol use (drinking five or more drinks on the same occasion [i.e., at the same time or within a couple of hours of each other] on at least 1 day in the past 30 days) was 29.4 percent, which was higher than the 24.6 percent among adults who did not meet the criteria for SMI.
