As a percentage of those aged 12 to 17 who had not used marijuana prior to the past year, the youth marijuana initiation rate in 2008 (5.6 percent) was similar to the rate in 2007 (5.2 percent).
Most states require that a physician clearly document in a patient?s chart that methadone is being prescribed for pain and not for the treatment of drug addiction. Many hospitals, however, do not administer methadone. All physicians with appropriate Drug Enforcement Agency registration may prescribe methadone for pain control.
Among teens aged 12 to 17, the types of drugs used in the past month varied by age group. Among 12 or 13 year olds, 2.0 percent used prescription-type drugs nonmedically, 1.2 percent used inhalants, and 0.9 percent used marijuana. Among 14 or 15 year olds, marijuana was the dominant drug used (5.8 percent), followed by prescription-type drugs used nonmedically (3.1 percent), and then by inhalants (1.7 percent).
