Among people who needed but did not receive treatment and felt they needed treatment for a substance use problem, the most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were not ready to stop using (40.0 percent) and cost or insurance barriers (34.5 percent). However, among the people who made an effort but were unable to get treatment, 42.5 percent reported cost or insurance barriers, and only 25.3 percent reported that they were not ready to stop using. These results are based on 2003 and 2004 combined data.

According to a 2006 survey among persons aged 12 or older who used pain relievers non-medically in the past 12 months, 55.7 percent reported that the source of the opiate the most recent time they used was from a friend or relative for free.

In 2005, among teens aged 12 to 17 with MDE in the past year who received prescription medication for depression, 28.7 percent believed that the prescription medication helped "not at all" or "a little." Nearly half of teens with MDE in the past year (47.2 percent) who received prescription medication for depression in the past year reported the medication was "a lot of help" or "extremely helpful."

Ecstasy can have many of the same physical effects as other stimulants, such as cocaine and amphetamines including increases in heart rate and blood pressure.

Most of the States in the top fifth for past month binge use of alcohol for persons aged 12 or older were in the Northern parts of the United States; four of them were the same as those for past month use of alcohol: Colorado, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and Minnesota (Table A.8,. Three States were in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older): North Dakota, Rhode Island, and South Dakota. Among all persons aged 12 or older, Utah had the lowest rate of binge alcohol use (16.6 percent) in the Nation. The highest rates of binge alcohol use were in the 18 to 25 age group, 40.9 percent for the Nation. North Dakota had the highest rate among those aged 18 to 25 (55.8 percent), among teens aged 12 to 17 (16.4 percent), and among all persons aged 12 or older (30.0 percent).

In 2006, among the 4.0 million persons aged 12 or older who received treatment for alcohol or illegal drug use in the past year, 2.2 million persons received treatment at a self help group, and 1.6 million received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an outpatient. There were 1.1 million persons who received treatment at a mental health center as an outpatient, 934,000 persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient, 816,000 at a hospital as an inpatient, 610,000 at a private doctor's office, 420,000 at a prison or jail, and 397,000 at an emergency room. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2005 and 2006.
