Interesting Facts and Statistics:

In 2006, adults aged 18 or older with MDE in the past year were more likely than those without MDE to have used an illegal drug in the past year (27.7 vs. 12.9 percent). A similar pattern was observed for specific types of past year illegal drug use, such as marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics.

According to the most recent government funded surveys, inhalant use decreases substantially when teens enter high school; 10th and 12th graders that were surveyed reported the lowest amount of inhalant abuse.

Marijuana smokers have many of the same respiratory problems as tobacco smokers, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, and a heightened risk of lung infections.

Among adults aged 18 or older who had MDE in the past year in 2008, 71.0 percent received treatment (i.e., saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional or used prescription medication) for depression in the same time period.

Studies show that marijuana users have a 4.8-fold increase in the risk of heart attack in the first hour after smoking the drug.

OxyContin users suffering from lung disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure or pre-existing respiratory depression may not realize that OxyContin may suppress the respiratory drive to the point of arrest.
