Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Amphetamine was first introduced in the 1930s as a remedy for nasal congestion.

The most recent studies that were related to chronic meth abuse have additionally revealed severe structural changes in areas of the brain that are associated with emotion and memory; this may account for many of the cognitive problems that are commonly observed in chronic meth users.

The rate of illegal drug use in the past year was higher among teens who received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year than among those who did not (29.1 vs. 17.2 percent). This pattern also was observed for marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics.

According to a survey taken by the University of Michigan, over 3 percent of high school seniors have used methamphetamine at least once in the past year.

Amphetamines may be sniffed, smoked, injected, or taken orally in tablet or capsule form.

Seizures of oxycodone products, including OxyContin, submitted to state and local laboratories increased 124% from 14,990 items/exhibits in 2004 to 33,612 items/exhibits in 2008.
