Rates of substance dependence or abuse were associated with age. In 2006, the rate of substance dependence or abuse among adults aged 18 to 25 (21.3 percent) was higher than that among teens aged 12 to 17 (8.0 percent) and among adults aged 26 or older (7.2 percent).

Between 2004 and 2005, there was no statistically significant change in the number or percentage of the population receiving substance use treatment within the past year (3.8 million, 1.6 percent in 2004; 3.9 million, 1.6 percent in 2005).

The two types of prescription drugs that are most commonly reported to be abused are opioids and benzodiazepines. Opioids are generally the drugs that physicians prescribe to control pain. Benzodiazepines, or tranquilizers, are most commonly used to manage anxiety, but have also been known to be prescribed for insomnia by some doctors. These drugs were both originally developed to be prescribed for short-term use in treating these conditions of pain and anxiety that is in reaction to a specific event; unfortunately, many people like the way these drugs make them feel and take them non-medically long term.

An individual who uses crystal meth by smoking or injecting the drug will experience an intense euphoric sensation that is usually followed by a high that can last for 12 hours or more.

In 2008, 11.1 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had participated in substance use prevention programs outside of school within the past year. This was lower than the percentage reported in 2002 (12.7 percent). Almost four fifths (78.0 percent) reported having seen or heard drug or alcohol prevention messages from sources outside of school, lower than in 2002 when the percentage was 83.2 percent. The percentage of school-enrolled teens reporting that they had seen or heard prevention messages at school also declined during this period, from 78.8 to 75.9 percent.

Based on a state agency survey given to 176,000 high school students in the state of Texas, there were over 100,000 students that had the opportunity to use inhalants, but chose not to because of understanding the ramifications due to education.
