Rates of substance dependence or abuse were associated with age. In 2006, the rate of substance dependence or abuse among adults aged 18 to 25 (21.3 percent) was higher than that among teens aged 12 to 17 (8.0 percent) and among adults aged 26 or older (7.2 percent).
Between 2004 and 2005, there was no statistically significant change in the number or percentage of the population receiving substance use treatment within the past year (3.8 million, 1.6 percent in 2004; 3.9 million, 1.6 percent in 2005).
The two types of prescription drugs that are most commonly reported to be abused are opioids and benzodiazepines. Opioids are generally the drugs that physicians prescribe to control pain. Benzodiazepines, or tranquilizers, are most commonly used to manage anxiety, but have also been known to be prescribed for insomnia by some doctors.
