Methadone addiction is one of the most serious risks of using this drug. Millions of unsuspecting individuals have fallen prey to the illusion that taking Methadone would somehow handle their opiate addiction and then that they could simply just stop taking it.
A pregnant woman who uses heroin should not attempt to suddenly stop taking the drug. This can put her baby at increased risk of death. She should consult a health care provider or drug treatment center about treatment with a drug called methadone. Although infants born to mothers taking methadone also have withdrawal symptoms, they can be safely treated in the nursery and generally do better than babies born to women who continue to use heroin.

Approximately one in eight teens aged 12 to 17 (11.7 percent) reported in 2005 that they had participated in drug, tobacco, or alcohol prevention programs outside of school in the past year. The prevalence of past month alcohol use was lower among teens who reported participating in these programs, 14.0 percent, than among teens who did not, 16.9 percent. Several national organizations have released statements of strong support for the new collaborative action plan to that has been implemented in order to fight prescription drug abuse; this plan was developed by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This new plan calls for healthcare provider training and increased patient education in regard to prescription medications, expanded monitoring of their use, better disposal of unwanted and/or unused drugs, and the shut-down of so-called pill mills in the U.S.
