In 2005, there were 2.4 million persons who were current cocaine users, which is more than in 2004 when the number was 2.0 million. However, the change in the rate of current use of cocaine between 2005 and 2004 (1.0 and 0.8 percent, respectively) was not statistically significant.
Among people aged 12 or older who needed but did not receive illegal drug use treatment and felt they needed treatment (based on 2005 2008 combined data), the most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) no health coverage and could not afford cost (37.2 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (29.5 percent), (c) concern that receiving treatment might cause neighbors/community to have negative opinion (15.4 percent), (d) not knowing where to go for treatment (15.3 percent), (e) possible negative effect on job (13.0 percent), and (f) being able to handle the problem without treatment (12.0 percent).
Rates of current, binge, and heavy alcohol use among underage persons declined between 2002 and 2008. Current use dropped from 28.8 to 26.4 percent; binge use declined from 19.3 to 17.4 percent; and heavy use declined from 6.2 to 5.5 percent.
Current use of smokeless tobacco decreased from 8.1 percent in 2005 to 3.2 percent in 2006 among American Indians or Alaska Natives aged 12 to 17. In the same age group, past month use of smokeless tobacco among blacks increased from 0.1 to 0.5 percent.
