The annual number of new cocaine users has generally increased over time. In 1975, there were 30,000 new users. The number increased from 300,000 in 1986 to 361,000 in 2000.
In 2002.2003, 44 percent of those who were determined to be dependent on or abusing alcohol in the past year were estimated to be dependent on alcohol in the past year. State estimates for alcohol dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 2.7 percent in Tennessee to 4.8 percent in the District of Columbia. Six of the States in the top fifth for dependence on or abuse of alcohol also could be found in the top fifth for dependence on alcohol for persons aged 12 or older. The highest rates for alcohol dependence occurred in the 18 to 25 age group, with Rhode Island having the highest rate (10.7 percent).
Methadone can be prescribed by a doctor for pain relief, but it can only be described for addiction treatment by physicians working in unison with methadone clinics.
