Ecstasy users commonly come from middle and upper class households.

There were 3.9 million persons aged 12 or older (1.6 percent of the population) who received some kind of treatment for a problem related to the use of alcohol or illegal drugs in 2005. More than half (2.1 million) received treatment at a self-help group. There were 1.5 million persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an outpatient, 1.1 million at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient, 1.0 million at a mental health center as an outpatient, 773,000 at a hospital as an inpatient, 460,000 at a private doctor's office, 399,000 at an emergency room, and 344,000 at a prison or jail. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2004 and 2005.

The rate for use of marijuana in the past year decreased from 2002 to 2008 but was stable between 2007 and 2008, while the number of persons who were dependent on or were abusing marijuana did not change significantly between 2002 and 2008 and between 2007 and 2008. However, between 2004 and 2008, the percentage and the number of persons dependent on or abusing pain relievers increased (from 0.6 to 0.7 percent and from 1.4 million to 1.7 million).

By stimulating the internal reward system in the user?s brain, drugs and alcohol motivate the addict to crave the drug to again stimulate the brain's reward center. These cravings will lead the addict to stop focusing on those things that used to be important to them, and to think only about obtaining more of the drug.

Alabama had the lowest rate of current use of marijuana among persons aged 12 or older (Table A.5). Six other Southern States were in the lowest fifth for marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older: Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia. Iowa, New Jersey, and Utah were the other States in the lowest fifth.

Among persons aged 12 to 49, the average age at first use of inhalants in 2006 was 15.7 years; it was 17.4 years for marijuana, 20.3 years for cocaine, 20.6 years for Ecstasy, 21.9 years for pain relievers, and 26.5 for sedatives.
