Counseling works by first helping the individual to recognize the existence of their substance abuse problem and the irrational thinking that is the hallmark of a drug addiction. Next, the individual needs to be encouraged to achieve and maintain abstinence from drugs and alcohol use and then to begin to experience personal growth in order to continue working towards a complete long term recovery from drug or alcohol addiction.
Between 2004 and 2005, there were no changes in the perceived risk of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or LSD use. However, since 2002, there have been increases in the perceived risk of smoking marijuana once a month (from 32.4 to 34.0 percent) and smoking marijuana once or twice a week (from 51.5 to 55.0 percent).
