Heavy drinking was reported by 5.7 percent of the population aged 12 or older, or 12.9 million people. These 2001 estimates are similar to the 2000 estimates.
Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (this category includes part-time college students and persons not enrolled in college) to report all three levels of drinking in 2001. Past month alcohol use was reported by 63.1 percent of full-time college students compared with 53.3 percent of their counterparts who were not currently enrolled full time. Binge and heavy use rates for college students were 42.5 and 18.2 percent, respectively, compared with 37.7 and 12.1 percent, respectively, for other persons aged 18 to 22.
In 2008, an estimated 12.4 percent of persons aged 12 or older drove under the influence of alcohol at least once in the past year. This percentage has dropped since 2002, when it was 14.2 percent. The rate of driving under the influence of alcohol was highest among persons aged 21 to 25 (26.1 percent).

For example, the rate of past month use of any illegal drug was 7.7 percent for teens whose parents always or sometimes helped with homework compared with 15.6 percent among teens who indicated that their parents seldom or never helped. Rates of current cigarette smoking and past month binge alcohol use were also lower among teens whose parents always or sometimes helped with homework (7.7 and 7.3 percent, respectively) than among teens whose parents did not (15.3 and 15.9 percent, respectively).
