Most adults aged 18 or older with substance dependence or abuse in 2005 were employed either full or part time. Of the 20.2 million adults classified with dependence or abuse, 15.5 million (76.7 percent) were employed.

Looking at combined 2004 2005 data, rates of past month cigarette smoking were lower for pregnant women than nonpregnant women among those aged 26 to 44 (10.4 vs. 28.8 percent) and among those aged 18 to 25 (26.4 vs. 35.8 percent) However, among those aged 15 to 17, the rate of cigarette smoking for pregnant women was higher than for nonpregnant women (22.3 vs. 18.5 percent), although the difference was not significant. Similar patterns were observed in the combined 2002 2003 data.

Among adults aged 26 or older, 5.8 percent reported current illegal drug use in 2005. In this age group, 4.1 percent used marijuana, and 1.9 percent used prescription-type drugs. Moreover, fewer than 1 percent used cocaine (0.8 percent), hallucinogens (0.2 percent), and inhalants (0.1 percent). Rates of lifetime, past year, and past month illegal drug use among adults aged 26 or older were unchanged between 2004 and 2005.

In 2001, the rate for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse was lowest in less urbanized nonmetropolitan counties (6.0 percent) and highest in small metropolitan counties and urbanized nonmetropolitan counties (7.7 percent).

Some people experience agitation and extreme suspicion when they quit using cocaine.

Illegal drugs other than marijuana include cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. A number of States (six) that fell into the top fifth for past month use of an illegal drug among those aged 12 or older also were ranked in the top fifth for current use of an illegal drug other than marijuana: Alaska, District of Columbia, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington. The other States in the top fifth (Arizona, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Oklahoma) reported rates of current use of an illegal drug that were lower and rates of past month marijuana use that fell into the middle or next-to-lowest fifth.
