In 2008, there were 114,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used heroin for the first time within the past 12 months. The average age at first use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 23.4 years in 2008. There were no significant changes in the number of initiates or in the average age at first use from 2007 to 2008. The number of heroin initiates was not significantly different from the number in 2002 (117,000).
Symptoms of withdrawal for long-term marijuana users begin within about 1 day following abstinence, peak at 2-3 days, and subside within 1 or 2 weeks following drug cessation.
The differences in the color of heroin are due to impurities left from the manufacturing process or the presence of additives.
Perceived risk is measured by NSDUH as the percentage reporting that there is great risk in the substance use behavior. Among teens aged 12 to 17, there were no changes in the perceived risk of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or LSD use between 2004 and 2005. However, between 2002 and 2005, there were increases in the perceived risk of smoking marijuana once a month (from 32.4 to 34.0 percent) and smoking marijuana once or twice a week (from 51.5 to 55.0 percent). On the other hand, the percentage of teens who perceived that trying heroin once or twice is a great risk declined from 58.5 percent in 2002 to 56.5 percent in 2005, and those who perceived that using cocaine once a month is a great risk declined from 50.5 to 48.8 percent.
