Among persons aged 12 or older in 2001, the rates for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse were highest among American Indians/Alaska Natives (13.9 percent) and among persons reporting more than one race (12.6 percent). Asians and Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders had the lowest rates for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse (3.7 and 4.9 percent, respectively). Among whites, the rate was 7.5 percent, among blacks, 6.2 percent, and among Hispanics, 7.8 percent.
A number of studies have shown that heavy Ecstasy users experience a myriad of mental changes, scoring significantly higher on measures of obsessive traits, anxiety, paranoid thoughts, and disturbed sleep, among others.
The rate of current illegal drug use in metropolitan areas was higher than the rate in nonmetropolitan areas in 2005. The rates were 8.4 percent in large metropolitan counties, 8.4 percent in small metropolitan counties, and 6.9 percent in nonmetropolitan counties as a group. Persons who were not current alcohol users were less likely to have used illegal drugs in the past month (3.4 percent) than those who reported (a) current use of alcohol but did not meet the criteria for binge or heavy use (6.4 percent), (b) binge use but did not meet the criteria for heavy use (16.0 percent), or (c) heavy use of alcohol (32.6 percent).
Drug addiction is the most serious and often deadly side effect that is associated with long term drug or alcohol abuse.
The rates of past month use of illegal drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol (including binge alcohol) were lower among teens aged 12 to 17 who agreed with these statements about religious beliefs than among those who disagreed. For example, in 2008, past month illegal drug use was reported by 6.8 percent of those who agreed that religious beliefs are a very important part of life compared with 16.2 percent of those who disagreed with that statement.
