There was a significant decrease in current use of crack among persons aged 18 to 22 who were not full-time college students, from 0.6 percent in 2005 to 0.2 percent in 2006. The rate was unchanged among full-time college students (0.1 percent in both 2005 and 2006).

Prior to 1970, the majority of marijuana initiates each year were young adults aged 18 to 25 years. Since 1972, the number of new users among teens aged 12 to 17 years has been uniformly greater than among young adults. The number of marijuana initiates among 12 to 17 year olds steadily increased from 0.8 million in 1990 to a plateau of 1.6 million per year between 1996 and 2000. Incidence among 18 to 25 year olds has generally held steady since 1990, ranging between 0.5 and 0.8 million initiates per year.

More than one fifth (23.3 percent) of persons aged 12 or older participated in binge drinking at least once in the 30 days prior to the survey in 2008. This translates to about 58.1 million people. The rate in 2008 is the same as the rate in 2007 (23.3 percent).

In 2008, 1.1 million adults (0.5 percent) aged 18 or older attempted suicide. Among those 1.1 million adults who attempted suicide, 0.9 million reported having made plans for suicide, while 0.2 million had not made suicide plans. Among adults, 678,000 (0.3 percent) received medical attention for their suicide attempt, and 500,000 (0.2 percent) stayed overnight or longer in a hospital as a result of their suicide attempt in the past year.

Based on 2004 2006 combined data, among persons who needed but did not receive illegal drug or alcohol use treatment, made an effort to receive treatment, and felt a need for treatment, the four most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) no health insurance and could not afford cost (36.3 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (23.9 percent), (c) able to handle the problem without treatment (11.2 percent), and (d) no transportation/inconvenient (10.0 percent).
