Rates for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse show substantial variation by age. The rate for illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse was 0.9 percent at age 12, and rates increased with age until the highest rate (22.8 percent) was reached at age 21. After age 21, the rates declined with age. Nonmedical users of prescription type psychotherapeutic drugs are asked questions regarding how they obtained the drugs they recently used nonmedically.
