Many individuals are unaware that abusing painkillers is like abusing heroin because their ingredients are very similar, as both drugs are opiods.

Based on 2005-2008 combined data, among persons aged 12 or older who needed but did not receive illegal drug or alcohol use treatment, felt a need for treatment, and made an effort to receive treatment, the most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) no health coverage and could not afford cost (37.4 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (29.3 percent), (c) able to handle the problem without treatment (13.0 percent), (d) no transportation/inconvenient (10.6 percent), (e) no program having type of treatment (8.3 percent), (f) did not feel need for treatment at the time (8.2 percent), (g) did not know where to go for treatment (8.1 percent), (h) might cause neighbors/community to have negative opinion (7.7 percent), and (i) might have negative effect on job (7.4 percent).

Xanax is available in four different strengths: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1.0mg. and 2.0mg.; the 2.0mg. dose of the drug is commonly known as a "Coffins" and sells for up to $10 per pill on the streets; the nickname came about because of the coma like effect that occurs when taking the drug at this high strength.

Marijuana was the most commonly used illegal drug in 2004, with a rate of 6.1 percent (14.6 million current users). There were 2.0 million current cocaine users, 467,000 of whom used crack. Hallucinogens were used by 929,000 persons, and there were an estimated 166,000 heroin users. All of these estimates are similar to estimates for 2003.

Among 12 to 17 year olds who had past year MDE, 34.6 percent had used illegal drugs during the same period. This was higher than the 18.2 percent of teens who did not have past year MDE who used illegal drugs during the past year. This pattern was similar for specific types of illegal drug use, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription type psychotherapeutics.

In 2005, among persons aged 12 or older, 14.6 percent of Asians, 24.5 percent of Hispanics, 28.4 percent of blacks, 30.3 percent of Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, 31.2 percent of whites, 33.9 percent of persons who reported two or more races, and 41.7 percent of American Indians or Alaska Natives reported that they had used a tobacco product in the past month. There were no statistically significant changes in past month tobacco use between 2004 and 2005 among any of these groups.
