Decatur, Georgia

Introduction to Decatur, Georgia

Decatur is a small city located in northeastern Georgia, just 5 miles northeast of Atlanta. Named after US naval hero Stephen Decatur, the city was founded in 1823 at the intersection of two Native American trails. Originally slated to be the southernmost terminus of the Western and Atlantic Railroad in the 1830s, the city objected, allowing nearby Atlanta to take that honor. The city played a pivotal role in the battle of Atlanta during the Civil War. While Atlanta eventually became one of America's largest and most important cities, Decatur retained its small town roots. With a population under 20,000, a land area of 4 square miles and its business district located near Atlanta neighborhoods, Decatur has succeeded in combining small town living with big city access.

Decatur Culture

For a small city, Decatur has more than its share of culture. Neighborhood Playhouse is a community theater that has staged comedy and drama productions for more than 25 years. PushPin Theater, formed in 1990 by Atlanta actors, has offered more than 50 workshop productions. Among the city's natives are musicians Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls and Michael Stipe of REM.

Decatur Sports and Leisure

Sporting events are available in nearby Atlanta at venues that are accessible from Decatur without having to enter the heart of the city. Baseball's Atlanta Braves play south of downtown at 50,000-seat Turner Field. The NFL's Atlanta Falcons play at 71,000-seat Georgia Dome, southwest of downtown Atlanta. Philips Arena, situated just west of downtown Atlanta, hosts home games of the NBA's Hawks and the NHL's Thrashers. Atlanta Motor Speedway, located 30 miles south of downtown Atlanta, is one of the largest and oldest in the country. It hosts two NASCAR Busch and Nextel Cup races each year.

Decatur Outdoors

Popular recreational activities include rafting on the scenic Chattooga River, camping at Stone Mountain Park Campground and golfing on the area's many courses. Some of the highest-regarded links in the country within an hour's drive: Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee, Hawk’s Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, and The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face.

Decatur at Night

Decatur's nightlife feeds off the many attractions in nearby Atlanta, one of the nation's youngest cities and the #3-ranked city on Forbes Magazine's 2004 Top Cities For Singles list. Nearby Athens, home of the University of Georgia, is another popular and loaded with a varied assortment of bars and clubs. But Decatur offers something Atlanta and Athens can't: the nearby pleasures of a big city scene without any of the accompanying headaches.

Do you live in Decatur, Georgia and have an addiction to drugs or alcohol? Is someone you know or care about battling drug or alcohol addiction and needs help? Drug and alcohol addiction exists everywhere in society today, and when an individual is caught up in addiction it can seem that there is no way out. There is in fact a way out, and it can be found at an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Facility in Decatur.

An Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehabilitation Program in Decatur treats drug addiction and alcoholism by teaching the individual how to overcome problems in life with real solutions, and that drugs and alcohol are not the answer. This can empower the individual, and put them in a position to start winning and achieving their goals. The end result of treatment at a Drug Rehab or Alcohol Rehabilitation Center in Decatur would be the individual being able to work their way through life and its obstacles, without the need or desire to use drugs or alcohol.

Due to the varying needs of individuals seeking treatment, there are a number of treatment programs available in Decatur to care for someone addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. There are Short-term Drug Treatment Programs, Inpatient Treatment, Long-term Treatment, Outpatient Drug Treatment Facilities, support group meetings, drug counseling, halfway houses and sober living.

Treatment at a Drug Treatment or Alcohol Rehabilitation Facility in Decatur will hone in on the two main causes of addiction, physical and psychological. Over time, the individual's brain adapts to the use of a psychoactive substance, lessening the effect of the drug. Physical tolerance develops as a result. The person ends up having to take more and more drugs or alcohol to try and get back to that first initial high that got them hooked.

Upon commencing treatment, an individual will address the physical aspect of addiction by taking part in a detoxification program in Decatur, Georgia, which will get him through the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that are caused by abrupt cessation of a substance. Withdrawal symptoms can typically last for days, weeks or months depending on the type of substance you're dealing with. Heroin withdrawal for example may take quite some time to get through, and is particularly painful. Detoxification along with psychological counseling will get the individual in the right frame of mind to start addressing the psychological issues that are involved with the addiction to drugs or alcohol. This method greatly increases the individual's chances of a successful recovery and prevents relapse.

A Drug Rehab or Alcohol Treatment Center in Decatur, GA. offers a sane environment that is conducive to a successful recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The individual will be taught how to properly handle life situations and control their own behavior in response to their environment. When the individual returns home following treatment, he will do so with a new mindset on how to engage with friends, family etc. The influences which may have triggered addiction in the individual will not have the same power over him. As part of treatment the individual will have addressed these psychological stressors as a priority and they will no longer have an effect on him.

Studies have shown that an individual who is addicted to drugs and alcohol shows changes in their brain, specifically the way it functions and responds to situations. This is an important reason that professional help at an Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Rehab Program in Decatur, GA. is the best option to try and beat addiction.

Someone who is caught up in the destructive cycle of addiction is up against a lot, the odds may seem against him. But they aren't if he pursues treatment at a Drug Rehabilitation or Alcohol Treatment Program in Decatur, GA. Treatment exists so that the addict is given the best chance at a successful recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. There is hope for you or someone you care about. Addiction has a cure, and treatment at an Alcohol Treatment or Drug Rehab Center in Decatur is that cure. Don't wait another minute to get the help you deserve.
