Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Statistics show that Opiate abuse and Opiate addiction cost Americans hundreds of billions of dollars annually including healthcare costs (and abuses of that system), lost job wages, traffic accidents, crime and the associated criminal justice system costs.
As was the case from 2002 through 2005, the rate of substance dependence or abuse for boys aged 12 or older in 2006 was about twice as high as the rate for girls (12.3 vs. 6.3 percent). Among teens aged 12 to 17, however, the rate of substance dependence or abuse among boys was similar to the rate among girls (8.0 vs. 8.1 percent).
Most (85.9 percent) of the 4.6 million past year alcohol initiates were younger than age 21 at the time of initiation.
Two-year moving average rates from 2002-2003 to 2007-2008 indicate that current cigarette use among women aged 15 to 44 decreased from 30.7 to 27.3 percent for those who were not pregnant and from 18.0 to 16.4 percent for those who were pregnant, although the latter difference was not statistically significant.
Among the 4.7 million adults on probation at some time in the past year, 29.2 percent reported current illegal drug use in 2005. This is higher than the rate of 7.4 percent among adults not on probation in 2005.
Rates of current alcohol use were 62.0 percent for full time employed adults aged 18 or older in 2006, higher than the rate for unemployed adults (52.1 percent).
