When it comes to the causes of drug abuse, it is not likely that anyone begins using a drug with the intention of becoming addicted to the substance. Experimentation and curiosity are usually the first factors that draw many to experiment with drugs. They may want to see what being high is like.
For the youngest age group (12 to 17), boys and girls had comparable rates of current alcohol use in 2001 (17.2 percent of boys and 17.3 percent of girls). However, rates of binge and heavy alcohol use were higher among male teens than female teens in both 2000 and 2001.
The States in the top fifth for past month use of alcohol among persons aged 12 or older (i.e., highest rates) were primarily in the Northern parts of the United States, including six States in the Northeast, one in the Midwest, and one in the West. The other two were in the South (Maryland and the District of Columbia). All of the States in the lowest fifth were in the South, except for Utah (West region). Utah had the lowest rate (33.0 percent) of past month alcohol use in the Nation.
