Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Physical dependence occurs when the body has adapted to the presence amphetamines, and withdrawal symptoms occur if its use is stopped abruptly.
Methadone addiction is one of the most serious risks of using this drug. Millions of unsuspecting individuals have fallen prey to the illusion that taking Methadone would somehow handle their opiate addiction and then that they could simply just stop taking it.
When the use of amphetamine changes from something a user wants to do to a compulsive activity that they have to do, then they have crossed over to the dark side of addiction.
In the 12 to 17 age group, the estimated percentage of those identified as having an alcohol abuse or dependence problem ranged from 3.1 percent in the District of Columbia to 9.9 percent in Montana. Among persons aged 18 to 25, the lowest percentage was found in California (13.4 percent) and the highest State percentage was in Nebraska (27.2 percent). Only Montana and Nebraska were in the highest fifth for the 12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older age groups.
In 2005, there were 2.4 million current cocaine users aged 12 or older, which is more than in 2004 when the number was 2.0 million. However, the change in the rate of current use of cocaine between 2005 and 2004 (1.0 and 0.8 percent, respectively) was not statistically significant.
The exact medical causes of drug and alcohol addiction cannot yet be completely understood. Researchers in the field of substance abuse can only state with assurance that the repeated use of addictive drugs can bring about dramatic changes in both the structure and the function of the brain in destructive ways that can result in compulsive drug use.
