There were statistically significant increases in the rates of illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse from 2000 to 2001 among persons aged 18 to 25 (15.4 to 18.4 percent) and among persons aged 26 or older (4.8 to 5.4 percent). For teens aged 12 to 17, rates were similar in 2000 and 2001 (7.7 and 7.8 percent).
Ambien is considered to be a sedative, but it is also a hypnotic. It affects chemicals in your brain that may become cause sleep problems (insomnia).
It is encouraging to note that many teenagers recognize the risks of heroin. The NSDUH found that 87.8 percent of 12th graders agree that heroin substance abuse represents a "great risk." The fact that so many teenagers recognize the dangers of heroin use is encouraging, and could lead to further declines in teen drug use of heroin.
In 2008, there were 1.2 million teens (5.0 percent) aged 12 to 17 who needed treatment for an alcohol use problem. Of this group, only 77,000 received treatment at a specialty facility (0.3 percent of all teens and 6.2 percent of teens who needed treatment), leaving almost 1.2 million teens who needed but did not receive treatment.
