Rates of treatment for mental health problems were associated with age for adults aged 18 or older: 11.2 percent for adults aged 18 to 25, 13.9 percent for adults aged 26 to 49, and 12.5 percent for adults aged 50 or older.
An individual can be addicted to alcohol, prescription drugs, inhalants, or other street drugs, such as cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamines. Understanding the reasons why people initially become attracted to drug or alcohol use can help to stop future users from becoming addicts.
The percentage of persons estimated to be dependent on illegal drugs in the past year was about 65 percent of those who were estimated to be dependent on or abused illegal drugs in the past year (Tables A.15 and A.16). State estimates for illegal drug dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 1.5 percent in Hawaii to 3.3 percent in the District of Columbia. The highest rates of illegal drug dependence were among persons aged 18 to 25, with the highest rate in Rhode Island.10.0 percent.
The percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 indicating great risk in having four or five drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day increased from 62.2 percent in 2002 to 65.9 percent in 2008. The rate of past month heavy alcohol use among teens aged 12 to 17 decreased from 2.5 percent in 2002 to 2.0 percent in 2008.
The percentages of teens reporting binge alcohol use and use of cigarettes and marijuana in the past month were lower among those who perceived great risk in using these substances than among those who did not perceive great risk. For example, in 2006, 6.0 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 who perceived great risk from "having 5 or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week" reported binge drinking in the past month (consumption of five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage on a single occasion on at least 1 day in the past 30 days); by contrast, past month binge drinking was reported by 13.2 percent of teens who saw moderate, slight, or no risk from having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. Past month marijuana use was reported by 1.5 percent of teens who saw great risk in smoking marijuana once a month compared with 9.5 percent of teens who saw moderate, slight, or no risk.
In 2001, underage current alcohol use rates were similar in large metropolitan areas (27.3 percent), small metropolitan areas (29.8 percent), and nonmetropolitan areas (29.3 percent). The rate in nonmetropolitan rural areas was 27.5 percent.
