Among unemployed adults aged 18 or older in 2005, 17.1 percent were current illegal drug users, which was higher than the 8.2 percent of those employed full time and 10.4 percent of those employed part time. However, most drug users were employed. Of the 17.2 million current illegal drug users aged 18 or older in 2005, 12.9 million (74.8 percent) were employed either full or part time.
This is the first year in which past year use of marijuana has been estimated at the State level. The State rankings for past year use are very similar to those for past month use. An estimated 10.8 percent of the national population aged 12 or older had used marijuana in the past year. Tennessee had the lowest rate (7.4 percent) of past year use of marijuana among persons aged 12 or older. Alaska had the highest rate of past year marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older (16.7 percent). The States with the highest rates of past year marijuana use were mostly in the West (five States) and the Northeast (four States).
Past year illegal drug use was higher among adults aged 18 or older with SPD (27.2 percent) than among adults without SPD (12.3 percent). Similarly, the rate of past month cigarette use was higher among adults with SPD (44.2 percent) than among adults without SPD (24.5 percent).
State percentages for past year dependence on or abuse of alcohol or illegal drugs among persons aged 12 or older ranged from a low of 7.4 percent in Alabama to a high of 12.0 percent in New Mexico. Rhode Island's rate of 29.4 percent was the highest among States for persons aged 18 to 25 (Table B.18).
Getting accurate numbers concerning methadone addiction is no possible, because there are at least a quarter million people getting the drug from clinics; this does not clarify how many of these individuals may be addicted to the drug.
Teens aged 12 to 17 who had engaged in fighting or other delinquent behaviors were more likely than other teens to have used illegal drugs in the past month. For example, in 2008, past month illegal drug use was reported by 15.9 percent of teens who had gotten into a serious fight at school or work in the past year compared with 7.3 percent of those who had not engaged in fighting, and by 39.8 percent of those who had stolen or tried to steal something worth over $50 in the past year compared with 7.7 percent of those who had not engaged in such theft.
