In 2005, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem was 23.2 million (9.5 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Of these, 2.3 million (0.9 percent of persons aged 12 or older and 10.0 percent of those who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility. Thus, there were 20.9 million persons (8.6 percent of the population aged 12 or older) who needed treatment for an illegal drug or alcohol use problem but did not receive treatment at a specialty substance abuse facility in the past year.
Past-month marijuana use among 12-to 17-year-olds climbed 9 percent from 2008 (6.7%) to 2009 (7.3).
Counseling works by first helping the individual to recognize the existence of their substance abuse problem and the irrational thinking that is the hallmark of a drug addiction. Next, the individual needs to be encouraged to achieve and maintain abstinence from drugs and alcohol use and then to begin to experience personal growth in order to continue working towards a complete long term recovery from drug or alcohol addiction.
Having MDE in the past year was associated with past year substance dependence or abuse in 2005. Among adults who had MDE in 2005, 19.9 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs, while among persons without MDE only 8.4 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol or illegal drugs.
