Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

In 2008, 87.9 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that in the past year their parents made them always or sometimes do chores around the house, 86.1 percent reported that their parents always or sometimes let them know that they had done a good job, and 85.4 percent reported that their parents let them know they were proud of something they had done. All of these percentages in 2008 were similar to those reported in 2007 and remained statistically unchanged from the rates reported in 2002. In 2008, however, 39.9 percent of teens reported that their parents limited the amount of time that they watched television, which was similar to the rate in 2007 (39.7 percent), but was higher than the 36.9 percent reported in 2002.

Much research has confirmed that the same sort of mechanisms that are involved in the development of a drug tolerance can eventually lead to profound changes in neurons and brain circuits, with the potential to severely compromise or even cause irreversible damage to the long-term health of the brain. One of the best examples of this is concerning glutamate-which is a neurotransmitter that influences the reward circuit and the ability to learn. When the optimal concentration of glutamate is altered by drug abuse, the brain attempts to compensate for this change in the level of the neurotransmitter, which can cause temporary or permanent impairment in cognitive function.

Ecstasy is synthetic-it doesn't come from a plant like marijuana does. Ecstasy users often make the drug in secret "labs"-in trailers, basements, and even kitchens-hidden around the country.

Between 1992 and 1994, there was a reduction of more than 29% in elementary school inhalant use and a 20% percent reduction the amount of high school students as related to "huffing".

Psychotherapeutics include the nonmedical use of any prescription type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, or sedatives. Over the counter substances are not included. In 2006, there were 2.6 million persons aged 12 or older who used psychotherapeutics nonmedically for the first time within the past year. The numbers of new users of specific psychotherapeutics in 2006 were 2.2 million for pain relievers, 1.1 million for tranquilizers, 845,000 for stimulants, and 267,000 for sedatives. There was a significant increase in the number of past year initiates of stimulants from 2005 (647,000) to 2006, but there were no significant changes in the estimates for the remaining psychotherapeutics.

Among persons aged 12 or older, boys were nearly twice as likely as girls (16.3 vs. 8.6 percent) to drive under the influence of alcohol in the past year.
