The rate of current illegal drug use among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005 was significantly lower than in 2002 . The rates were 11.6 percent in 2002, 11.2 percent in 2003, 10.6 percent in 2004, and 9.9 percent in 2005.
Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (this category includes part-time college students and persons not enrolled in college) to use alcohol, binge drink, and drink heavily in 2004. Binge and heavy use rates for college students were 43.4 and 18.6 percent, respectively, compared with 39.4 and 13.5 percent, respectively, for other persons aged 18 to 22.
Most teens aged 12 to 17 believed their parents would "strongly disapprove" of their using substances. In 2006, 91.4 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day. A majority of teens (90.4 percent) reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice, and 89.6 percent reported their parents would strongly disapprove of their having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day. These rates of perceived parental disapproval in using substances in 2006 were similar to those reported in 2005.
Drug and alcohol counseling that is administered within the context of a comprehensive treatment program will generally consists of four different components: Assessing the level of drug or alcohol usage and the rate of potential for addiction. Educating the individual regarding the physical and mental effects of their substance of abuse and teaching them how to recognize and prevent a potential addiction problem.
