In 2007, 38.9 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 with past year MDE received treatment for depression (saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional or used prescription medication). Among teens with past year MDE, 20.5 percent saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional only, 2.5 percent used prescription medication only, and 15.6 percent received treatment from both sources for depression in the past year.
In 2005, among adults aged 18 or older who first tried marijuana at age 14 or younger, 13.3 percent were classified with illegal drug dependence or abuse, higher than the 2.4 percent of adults who had first used marijuana at age 18 or older.
Illegal drugs other than marijuana include cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. The national estimate of past month use of any illegal drug other than marijuana among persons aged 12 or older was 3.7 percent for 2002.2003 combined. A number of States (five) that were in the top fifth for past month use of an illegal drug among those aged 12 or older also were ranked in the top fifth for past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana: Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Rhode Island.
The District of Columbia had a somewhat different relationship for these two measures among persons aged 26 or older. It ranked in the highest fifth for perception of great risk of binge drinking among persons aged 26 or older (47.2 percent) as well as in the highest fifth for actual binge use of alcohol in the same age group (24.4 percent).
