Recent studies show a shift from injecting the opiate heroin to snorting or smoking it because of increased purity and the misconception that these forms are safer.

There were no changes in rates of drug use among adults aged 26 or older between 2000 and 2001. The rate of current illegal drug use was 4.2 percent in 2000 and 4.5 percent in 2001.

Among young adults aged 18 to 25 in 2008, the rate of binge drinking was 41.0 percent, and the rate of heavy drinking was 14.5 percent. These rates were similar to the rates in 2007.

Meth was developed in 1919 and was used by both the Axis and Allies in World War II to keep troops alert and motivated. In the 1950's meth was commonly prescribed as a diet aid, to fight depression, and give housewives a "boost". The US government criminalized meth in 1970 and classified it as a Schedule II drug, meaning that it has very limited medical use.

The effects of bath salts ? used inappropriately despite their warning labels ? when smoked or taken orally are reported to have effects that are very similar to cocaine or meth.

Among persons aged 12 or older, the overall rate of past month marijuana use in 2008 (6.1 percent) was similar to the rate in 2007 and the rates in earlier years going back to 2002.
