As of 1995 3.6 percent of college students surveyed had used cocaine within the past year, and 0.7 percent had used cocaine in the past month.

Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (i.e., part time college students and persons not currently enrolled in college) to use alcohol in the past month, binge drink, and drink heavily. Among full time college students in 2008, 61.0 percent were current drinkers, 40.5 percent binge drank, and 16.3 percent were heavy drinkers. Among those not enrolled full time in college, these rates were 54.2, 38.1, and 13.0 percent, respectively. Rates of current alcohol use and binge use for full time college students decreased from 2007, when they were 63.7 and 43.6 percent, respectively.

Because of its availability and intense effects, crack cocaine has grown in popularity.

In 2008, 87.9 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that in the past year their parents made them always or sometimes do chores around the house, 86.1 percent reported that their parents always or sometimes let them know that they had done a good job, and 85.4 percent reported that their parents let them know they were proud of something they had done. All of these percentages in 2008 were similar to those reported in 2007 and remained statistically unchanged from the rates reported in 2002. In 2008, however, 39.9 percent of teens reported that their parents limited the amount of time that they watched television, which was similar to the rate in 2007 (39.7 percent), but was higher than the 36.9 percent reported in 2002.

Nationally in 2002.2003, about 3.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illegal drugs in the past year. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of past year illegal drug dependence or abuse (4.0 percent) among persons aged 12 or older, and Kansas had the lowest rate (2.5 percent). Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (four States) or the Northeast (four States). The highest rates for past year illegal drug dependence or abuse occurred in the 18 to 25 age group, with Rhode Island having the highest rate (12.7 percent) (Table B.16).

Some studies on the use of LSD have indicated that there are no withdrawal symptoms and the drug is not addictive?but a ?bad trip? may require treatment due to extreme panic, fright or because of an attempt to commit suicide.
