Long-term marijuana users who cease using the drug report symptoms such as irritability, sleeplessness, decreased appetite, anxiety, and drug craving, all of which make it difficult to quit.
Among persons aged 12 or older, the overall rate of past month marijuana use in 2006 (6.0 percent) was the same as in 2005 and was similar to the rates in earlier years going back to 2002.
Among people who needed but did not receive illegal drug use treatment and felt they needed treatment (based on 2004 2005 combined data), the six most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) cost or insurance barriers (36.7 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (34.7 percent), (c) stigma (24.4 percent), (d) did not feel the need for treatment at the time or could handle the problem without treatment (16.3 percent), (e) did not know where to go for treatment (16.3 percent), and (f) other access barriers (16.1 percent).
In 2008, there were 1.9 million current cocaine users aged 12 or older, comprising 0.7 percent of the population. These estimates were similar to the number and rate in 2007 (2.1 million or 0.8 percent), but lower than the estimates in 2006 (2.4 million or 1.0 percent).
