Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Past month nonmedical use of prescription-type drugs among young adults increased from 5.4 percent in 2002 to 6.3 percent in 2005. This was primarily due to an increase in pain reliever use, which was 4.1 percent in 2002 and 4.7 percent in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Drug researchers have reported that long-term potentiating, or LTP, has been shown to be blocked in the brains of rats given as little as a single dose of morphine. The impact of even a single dose of the drug proved to be very powerful, with LTP continuing to be up to blocked 24 hours later -- long after the drug was out of the animal's system.

The withdrawal symptoms that are typically associated with Methadone are much more severe than those of morphine, taken at equivalent doses, and are significantly more prolonged.

In 2006, 4.0 million persons aged 12 or older (1.6 percent of the population) received some kind of treatment for a problem related to the use of alcohol or illegal drugs. Of these, 1.6 million received treatment for the use of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 0.9 million received treatment for the use of illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 1.2 million received treatment for the use of alcohol but not illegal drugs. (Note that estimates by substance do not add to the total number of persons receiving treatment because the total includes persons who reported receiving treatment but did not report for which substance the treatment was received.)

Nationally in 2002, about 3.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illegal drugs in the past year (Table A.15). The District of Columbia had the highest rate of illegal drug abuse or dependence for persons aged 12 or older (4.3 percent), and Kansas had the lowest rate (2.5 percent). Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (six States). Only four of the States in the top fifth for illegal drug dependence or abuse also were in the top fifth for alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older: District of Columbia, Montana, New Mexico, and Rhode Island. Rhode Island had the highest rate for illegal drug dependence or abuse among persons aged 18 to 25 (13.9 percent); Vermont had the highest rate among teens (8.8 percent). There were no States common to the highest fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

Amphetamine users will take depressant drugs, particularly barbiturates, alcohol, and opiates, as a aid sleep or to compensate for amphetamine overdose.
