Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2006, Asians and blacks had the lowest rates of past month alcohol use. Only 7.6 percent of Asian teens and 10.5 percent of black teens were current drinkers, while 15.3 percent of Hispanic teens, 16.2 percent of those reporting two or more races, 19.2 percent of white teens, and 20.5 percent of American Indian or Alaska Native teens were current drinkers.

Alcoholism is a major health threat in the United States; this addiction ranks right up there with cancer and heart disease which are both massive health threats.

The number and percentage of current nonmedical users of psychotherapeutic drugs in 2008 (6.2 million or 2.5 percent) were lower than in 2007 (6.9 million or 2.8 percent). A small decline in the percentage of pain reliever users between 2007 (2.1 percent) and 2008 (1.9 percent), although not statistically significant, partly contributed to the lower rate for current use of psychotherapeutic drugs.

In 1991, approximately 80 percent of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders perceived there to be ?great risk? in using marijuana regularly. Those rates dropped to about 70 percent of 8th graders, 60 percent of 10th graders, and 55 percent of 12th graders in 2009.

The incidence of hallucinogen use has exhibited two notable periods of increase. Between 1965 and 1971, the number of initiates rose tenfold, from 90,000 to 900,000. The second period of increase began in 1990 when there were approximately 600,000 new users. By 2000, the number of initiates rose nearly threefold, to 1.5 million.

Getting accurate numbers concerning methadone addiction is no possible, because there are at least a quarter million people getting the drug from clinics; this does not clarify how many of these individuals may be addicted to the drug.
