In 2006, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an illegal drug use problem was 7.8 million (3.2 percent of the total population). Of these, 1.6 million (0.6 percent of the total population and 20.3 percent of the persons who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility for an illegal drug use problem in the past year. Thus, there were 6.2 million persons (2.5 percent of the total population) who needed treatment but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for an illegal drug use problem in 2006.
Long term residential drug rehab treatment generally involves a period of three to six months so as to provide the individual with an extensive change of environment as well as around the clock professional support. Research has proven that this type of treatment is by far the most successful for those individuals who have a history of heavy drug addiction spanning over many years.
The inhalants that cause the most liver and kidney damage are toluene-containing substances and chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as correction fluids and dry cleaning fluids.
Nationally in 2002, about 3.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illegal drugs in the past year. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of illegal drug abuse or dependence for persons aged 12 or older (4.3 percent), and Kansas had the lowest rate (2.5 percent). Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (six States). Only four of the States in the top fifth for illegal drug dependence or abuse also were in the top fifth for alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older: District of Columbia, Montana, New Mexico, and Rhode Island. The increase in cigarette initiation was due primarily to an increase among persons initiating at age 18 or older.
