Interesting Facts and Statistics:

As of 2009, 830,000 12 to 17 year-olds high school students displayed the characteristics of marijuana dependence or abuse in the past year.

The capability of a drug rehab center to handle all of the various types of drug addiction: heroin, cocaine, crack, meth, marijuana, ecstasy, prescription drugs and alcohol are vitally important.

In 2008, probation status was associated with substance dependence or abuse. The rate of substance dependence or abuse was 34.0 percent among adults who were on probation during the past year, which was significantly higher than the rate among adults who were not on probation during the past year (8.4 percent).

SMI in the past year was associated with past year substance dependence or abuse. Among adults aged 18 or older with SMI in 2008, 25.2 percent (2.5 million) were dependent on or abused illegal drugs or alcohol. The rate among adults without SMI was 8.3 percent (17.9 million).

Our brains are wired in a way that ensures that we will repeat activities by associating them with pleasure or reward. Whenever this reward circuit is activated, the brain notes that something important is happening that needs to be remembered; this process in the brain is what strongly reinforces us to repeat the behavior again and again, without even consciously thinking about it. Because drugs of abuse stimulate this same reward circuit within the brain, drug use can easily become a repetitive unconscious act.

There were 9.6 million people aged 12 or older (3.9 percent) who were current users of illegal drugs other than marijuana in 2006. Most (7.0 million persons, or 2.8 percent of the population) used psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically. In addition to the estimated 5.2 million nonmedical users of pain relievers in 2006, 1.8 million used tranquilizers, 1.2 million used stimulants, and 385,000 used sedatives. The numbers of nonmedical users of tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives were similar to the corresponding numbers in 2005, and the percentage rates also remained stable.
