It is important to emphasize the fact that the more drug abuse begins to affect and manipulate an individual?s life, the more likely it is that they have a drug problem that eventually can develop into a full-blown addiction.
In 2006, among past year marijuana users aged 12 or older, 12.3 percent used marijuana on 300 or more days within the past 12 months. This translates into 3.1 million using marijuana on a daily or almost daily basis over a 12 month period, similar to the estimate in 2005. Among past month marijuana users aged 12 or older, 34.4 percent (5.1 million) used the drug on 20 or more days in the past month.
Marijuana also harms when it contributes to auto crashes or other incidents that injure or kill, a problem that is especially prevalent among young people. In a study reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, even a moderate dose of marijuana was shown to impair driving performance.
The rate of current alcohol use was 63.0 percent for full-time employed adults aged 18 or older in 2008, higher than the rate for unemployed adults (55.5 percent). However, the rate of heavy use for unemployed persons was 12.8 percent, which was higher than the rate of 8.8 percent for full-time employed persons. There was no significant difference in binge alcohol use rates between full-time employed adults (30.3 percent) and unemployed adults (33.4 percent).
Marijuana was the most commonly used illegal drug (14.6 million past month users). In 2005, it was used by 74.2 percent of current illegal drug users. Among current illegal drug users, 54.5 percent used only marijuana, 19.6 percent used marijuana and another illegal drug, and the remaining 25.8 percent used only an illegal drug other than marijuana in the past month.
As of 2008 an estimated 3.8 million Americans aged 12 or older reported trying heroin at least once during their lifetimes.
