Nationally in 2002, about 3.0 percent of persons aged 12 or older were dependent on or had abused illegal drugs in the past year. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of illegal drug abuse or dependence for persons aged 12 or older (4.3 percent), and Kansas had the lowest rate (2.5 percent). Most of the States in the highest fifth were in the West (six States). Only four of the States in the top fifth for illegal drug dependence or abuse also were in the top fifth for alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older: District of Columbia, Montana, New Mexico, and Rhode Island. Rhode Island had the highest rate for illegal drug dependence or abuse among persons aged 18 to 25 (13.9 percent); Vermont had the highest rate among teens (8.8 percent). There were no States common to the highest fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

Dilaudid is a derivative of morphine; this drug is a powerful narcotic analgesic that has proven to be useful in the relief of pain.

An individual was arrested in Maine in 2000 and charged with selling approximately $8,000 worth of OxyContin weekly. The OxyContin was prescribed to the individual's wife to control cancer-related pain. The OxyContin pills were paid for by Medicaid, and the husband sold most of them for a substantial profit.

The rate of illegal drug use in metropolitan areas was higher than the rate in nonmetropolitan counties. Rates were 7.6 percent in large metropolitan counties, 7.1 percent in small metropolitan counties, and 5.8 percent in nonmetropolitan counties. Completely rural nonmetropolitan counties had lower rates of illegal drug use than other types of nonmetropolitan counties. Rates were 4.8 percent in completely rural counties and 5.5 percent in less urbanized nonmetropolitan counties.

The resulting liquid contains unpurified cocaine alkaloids and may additionally contain waxy material from the leaves. This waxy material can be removed by heating and then cooling the mixture, a process that solidifies the unwanted wax.

Among adults aged 18 or older with MDE in the past year, approximately half of those with no insurance (49.6 percent) received treatment for depression in the past year compared with higher rates for those with insurance: 71.1 percent of adults with private insurance, 79.9 percent of adults covered by Medicaid or CHIP, and 86.8 percent of adults with other health insurance (including Medicare, CHAMPUS, TRICARE, CHAMPVA, VA, and other sources of health care or insurance).
