Past month illegal drug use also was associated with the level of past month alcohol use. Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2008 who were heavy drinkers (i.e., consumed five or more drinks on the same occasion on each of 5 or more days in the past 30 days), 68.5 percent also were current illegal drug users, which was higher than the rate among nondrinkers (4.3 percent). The rate of current illegal drug use among teens reporting heavy drinking in the past month increased from 60.1 percent in 2007 to 68.5 percent in 2008, and a similar increase in illegal drug use (from 37.9 to 42.6 percent) was seen among teens who engaged in binge drinking (i.e., consumption of five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the past month).
Drug addiction is an extremely serious problem that affects hundreds of thousands of individuals in the U.S. from all walks of life. Any person can succumb to a drug or alcohol addiction. The national rate in 2002.2003 for past year dependence on or abuse of alcohol or illegal drugs among persons aged 12 or older was about 9.2 percent (Table B.18). When examining dependence on or abuse of alcohol or illegal drugs at the State level, the States with high rates for alcohol dependence or abuse tended to dominate the top fifth for alcohol and illegal drug dependence or abuse combined because alcohol accounts for the vast majority of substance dependence or abuse. Seven States that ranked in the highest fifth for past year alcohol dependence or abuse also ranked in the top fifth for past year dependence on or abuse of alcohol or illegal drugs among persons aged 12 or older.
In 2008, adults aged 21 or older who had first used alcohol at age 14 or younger were more than 5 times as likely to be classified with alcohol dependence or abuse than adults who had their first drink at age 21 or older (15.1 vs. 2.6 percent).
Methadone's life threatening side effects that include death, have occurred in patient that were just starting to use Methadone for pain control; these same effects have been seen in patients who have switched to Methadone after being treated for pain with other strong narcotic pain relievers.
In 2008, about half (49.2 percent) of the teens aged 12 to 17 reported that it would be "fairly easy" or "very easy" for them to obtain marijuana if they wanted some. One in seven (13.0 percent) indicated that heroin would be "fairly" or "very" easily available, and 13.8 percent reported so for LSD. Between 2002 and 2008, there were decreases in the perceived easy availability of marijuana (from 55.0 to 49.2 percent), cocaine (from 25.0 to 22.1 percent), crack (from 26.5 to 23.2 percent), LSD (from 19.4 to 13.8 percent), and heroin (from 15.8 to 13.0 percent). The perceived availability of the following illegal drugs declined between 2007 and 2008: cocaine from 24.5 to 22.1 percent; crack from 25.3 to 23.2 percent; and heroin from 14.1 to 13.0 percent. However, the perceived availability of marijuana and LSD did not change significantly during the 2-year period.
