Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Volatile solvents, gases, aerosols and other inhalants are often the first types of drugs that young children use.

Nearly one-quarter of those who experiment with heroin develop a full-blown drug addiction, and this is a conservative estimate.

In the 18 to 25 age group, the rate of past month use of these drugs was highest in Rhode Island (13.4 percent); among teens, the rate was highest in Arizona (7.2 percent) (Table B.6). Only Colorado and Kentucky were in the top fifth in all three age groups and for all persons aged 12 or older.

In 2001, an estimated 8.1 million (3.6 percent) of Americans aged 12 or older had tried "Ecstasy" at least once in their lifetime. This is more than the estimated 6.5 million (2.9 percent) lifetime users in 2000. The number of current users in 2001 was estimated to be 786,000 (0.3 percent). The 2000 NHSDA was not designed to report past month or past year use of Ecstasy.

The perceived risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week was stable between 2002 and 2005, while the perceived risk of having four or five drinks nearly every day changed during the period. The percentages of teens aged 12 to 17 who reported that they perceived great risk in having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week were 38.2 percent in 2002, 38.5 percent in 2003, 38.1 percent in 2004, and 38.4 percent in 2005. The percentage of teens indicating a great risk in having four or five drinks nearly every day had been stable between 2002 and 2004, but rose from 61.8 percent in 2004 to 63.8 percent in 2005. Past month binge use of alcohol decreased among teens from 11.1 percent in 2004 to 9.9 percent in 2005, and heavy use remained unchanged, 2.7 percent in 2004 and 2.4 percent in 2005.

The rate of binge drinking was 41.9 percent for young adults aged 18 to 25. Heavy alcohol use was reported by 15.3 percent of persons aged 18 to 25. These rates are similar to the rates in 2002, 2003, and 2004.
