Initiation of tranquilizer use has been increasing steadily since 1986. The number of initiates increased significantly from 734,000 in 1999 to 973,000 in 2000. Further, the age distribution of initiates shifted during the 1990s. In 1990, about 15 percent of initiates were teens aged 12 to 17; by the late 1990s, about one third of all initiates were teens.
Past year methamphetamine use was higher in the West (1.6 percent) than in the Northeast (0.3 percent), Midwest (0.5 percent) or South (0.7 percent) in 2006. The rates of past year use in 2006 were similar to those in 2002 in each region.
Female teens were more likely than male teens to report using outpatient specialty mental health services (13.6 vs. 9.3 percent), education services (13.0 vs. 10.5 percent), or general medical based services (3.2 vs. 2.6 percent), but there was no significant gender difference in the use of inpatient specialty mental health services.
