Addiction happens when an individual loses control over a substance or activity; family history, personality, and environment all appear to play a role in developing addictions.

Vicodin is a white table with an oblong shape that is scored down the middle and has an imprint such as Vicodin or Vicodin ES imprinted on it; the only exception to the imprint is with the generic brand of the drug.

Past month marijuana use among boys aged 12 to 17 declined from 9.1 percent in 2002 to 6.8 percent in 2006. In 2008, the rate was 7.3 percent, which was not significantly different from the rate in 2006 and was lower than the rate in 2002. Among female teens, little change in current marijuana use occurred from 2002 to 2004, but rates subsequently declined and the percentage in 2008 (6.0 percent) was lower than that in 2002 (7.2 percent).

Estimates of past month use of any illegal drug ranged from a low of 6.1 percent in Iowa to a high of 12.4 percent in the District of Columbia for all persons aged 12 or older (Table A.1). As was indicated in Chapter 1, the 2002 model-based estimates are not comparable with estimates for 2001 and prior years owing to the new methodological improvements.
