Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
In 2008, among adults aged 18 or older, age at first use of marijuana was associated with dependence on or abuse of marijuana. Among those who first tried marijuana at age 14 or younger, 13.5 percent were classified with illegal drug dependence or abuse, higher than the 2.2 percent of adults who had first used marijuana at age 18 or older.
Much research that has been conducted regarding substance abuse has indicated that long-term drug addiction causes significant changes in brain function that persist long after the individual stops using drugs.
In 2008, during their most recent treatment in the past year, 2.7 million persons aged 12 or older reported receiving treatment for alcohol use, and 947,000 persons reported receiving treatment for marijuana use. Accordingly, estimates on receiving treatment for the use of other drugs were 663,000 persons for cocaine, 601,000 for pain relievers, 341,000 for heroin, 336,000 for stimulants, 326,000 for tranquilizers, and 287,000 for hallucinogens. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008. Also, none of these estimates changed significantly between 2002 and 2008, except that the numbers who received treatment for the use of pain relievers and tranquilizers in 2008 were higher than the numbers in 2002 (360,000 and 197,000 persons, respectively). (Note that respondents could indicate that they received treatment for more than one substance during their most recent treatment.)
Among unemployed adults aged 18 or older in 2005, 17.1 percent were current illegal drug users, which was higher than the 8.2 percent of those employed full time and 10.4 percent of those employed part time. However, most drug users were employed. Of the 17.2 million current illegal drug users aged 18 or older in 2005, 12.9 million (74.8 percent) were employed either full or part time.
Nearly one percent of Americans, or 2.1 million people, are currently using cocaine.
Heroin withdrawal begins as early as a few hours after the drug was last used. The body needs time to recover, and heroin withdrawal symptoms result. Heroin withdrawal can occur whenever any chronic use is discontinued or reduced. Users also experience severe craving for the drug during withdrawal, precipitating continued abuse and/or relapse. Major withdrawal symptoms peak between 48 and 72 hours after the last dose and typically subside after about a week; however, some individuals may show persistent withdrawal symptoms for months. Some people experience heroin withdrawal during hospitalization for health conditions other than their addiction. There are a few people in these circumstances that do not even realize they are experiencing withdrawal and think they just have the flu.
