Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
As was the case from 2002 through 2004, boys aged 12 or older in 2005 were about twice as likely to be classified with substance dependence or abuse as girls (12.0 vs. 6.4 percent). Among teens aged 12 to 17, however, the rate of substance dependence or abuse among boys was similar to the rate among girls (7.8 vs. 8.3 percent).
In 2008, among the 4.0 million persons aged 12 or older who received treatment for alcohol or illegal drug use in the past year, 2.2 million persons received treatment at a self-help group, and 1.5 million received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an outpatient. There were 1.1 million persons who received treatment at a mental health center as an outpatient, 743,000 persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient, 675,000 at a hospital as an inpatient, 672,000 at a private doctor's office, 374,000 at an emergency room, and 343,000 at a prison or jail. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008 or between 2002 and 2008, except that the number of persons who received treatment at a rehabilitation facility as an inpatient in 2008 was lower than that in 2007 (1.0 million) and 2002 (1.1 million).
This section addresses the need for and receipt of treatment for an illegal drug problem. It includes estimates of the drug abuse "treatment gap," which is defined as those persons who needed treatment for an illegal drug problem in the past year but did not receive treatment. An individual is defined as needing treatment if he or she is dependent on or has abused an illegal drug or received treatment for an illegal drug problem at a "specialty" substance abuse facility in the past 12 months. "Specialty" substance abuse facilities include drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities (inpatient or outpatient), hospitals (inpatient only), and mental health centers.
State estimates for 2002 for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 6.3 percent in Alabama to 10.2 percent in Nebraska. States in the highest fifth tended to be mostly Western (Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, and Wyoming) or Midwestern (Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota). Five States in the lowest fifth were in the South (Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and West Virginia).
75% of the individuals that were arrested during 2009 in relation to domestic violence were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Boys are twice as likely to be classified with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs or alcohol as girls. Among boys, 10.0 percent were classified with illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse, while 4.9 percent of girls were classified with illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse.
