Almost all addicted individuals believe they can stop using drugs or alcohol on their own in the beginning and most eventually will try to stop without professional help. However, most of these attempts generally will result in failure in terms of achieving long-term abstinence.
Among women aged 15 to 44, combined data for 2007 and 2008 indicated that the rate of past month cigarette use was lower among those who were pregnant (16.4 percent) than it was among those who were not pregnant (27.3 percent). This pattern was also evident among women aged 18 to 25 (22.1 vs. 32.3 percent for pregnant and nonpregnant women, respectively) and among women aged 26 to 44 (12.6 vs. 27.4 percent, respectively).
