Among the 311 pairs discordant for early marijuana initiation (just one twin in each pair smoked marijuana before age 17), the early initiators were 3.5 times as likely as their twins to attempt suicide, but no more likely to suffer from major depression.
Between 1973 and 1982, methamphetamine incidence exhibited a plateau of about 300,000 to 400,000 new users per year. During this period, the majority of new users were aged 18 to 25. The new users during the rise in incidence in the 1990s, however, were approximately evenly split between 12 to 17 year olds and 18 to 25 year olds. This shift in age distribution was reflected in the average age of new users, which fell from 22.3 years in 1990 to 18.4 years in 2000.
Some of the symptoms of the withdrawal syndrome that is associated with inhalant abuse are similar to the long term abuse of other mind altering drugs; individuals that are addicted will usually be unable to stop using without professional help.
A majority of teens aged 12 to 17 (90.8 percent) in 2008 reported that their parents would strongly disapprove of their trying marijuana or hashish once or twice. Current marijuana use was much less prevalent among teens who perceived strong parental disapproval for trying marijuana or hashish once or twice than for those who did not (4.3 vs. 29.8 percent).
The rate of current alcohol use among teens aged 12 to 17 was 16.6 percent in 2006. Youth binge and heavy drinking rates were 10.3 and 2.4 percent, respectively. These rates are essentially the same as the 2005 rates (16.5 percent, 9.9 percent, and 2.4 percent, respectively).
