The number of 12-17 year olds admitted to treatment for meth addiction more than doubled between 1994 and 2004.

Among young adults 18 to 22 years old, full-time college students were less likely to be current cigarette smokers than their peers who were not enrolled full time in college. Cigarette use in the past month in 2005 was reported by 30.6 percent of full-time college students compared with 42.7 percent of those not enrolled full time.

Rates of marijuana use among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders are higher than rates for any other illegal drug.

Under the influence of Ambien, it is common for people to take more than is actually necessary because they have forgotten that they have already taken their nightly dose of the drug. In this scenario, the elderly population is at a much higher risk.

A majority of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they disapprove of their peers using substances. In 2008, 89.6 percent of teens "strongly" or "somewhat" disapproved of their peers smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day, which was similar to the rate of 89.7 percent in 2007, but higher than the 87.1 percent in 2002. Also in 2008, 82.7 percent strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers using marijuana or hashish once a month or more, which was similar to the 82.9 percent reported in 2007, but was an increase from the 80.4 percent reported in 2002. In addition, 87.0 percent of teens strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day in 2008, which was similar to the 86.6 percent reported in 2007, but was higher than the 84.7 percent reported in 2002.

The rate of current hallucinogen use among teens aged 12 to 17 increased from 0.7 percent in 2007 to 1.0 percent in 2008.
