While in a drug rehabilitation program the addict will detox off the drug or drugs they are addicted to and begin to experience what it feels like to live a life drug-free. In rehab, recovering addicts are in a supportive drug-free environment. They are able to address the issues that bought them to rehab. Often times, they will work one on one with trained counselors as well as in groups. Being surrounded by others in the recovery process provides them with many shoulders to lean on, not to mention the treatment benefit of professionally trained staff.
Of the 21.1 million people who needed but did not receive treatment in 2004, an estimated 1.2 million (5.8 percent) reported that they felt they needed treatment for their alcohol or drug use problem. Of the 1.2 million persons who felt they needed treatment, 441,000 (35.8 percent) reported that they made an effort but were unable to get treatment, and 792,000 (64.2 percent) reported making no effort to get treatment.
Rates of drug use are associated with age. Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rates of current illegal drug use increased with age: 3.8 percent at ages 12 or 13, 8.9 percent at ages 14 or 15, and 17.0 percent at ages 16 or 17. The highest rate was among persons aged 18 to 20 (22.3 percent). The rate was 18.7 percent among those aged 21 to 25 and declined with increasing age among older adults.
The rate of past month cigarette use among 12 to 17 year olds declined from 13.0 percent in 2002 to 10.8 percent in 2005. Cigar use in the past month declined to 4.2 percent of teens in 2005 from the 2004 estimate of 4.8 percent. Past month smokeless tobacco use was reported by 2.1 percent of teens in 2005, similar to estimates since 2002.
