A factor that may influence an individual from Polo in their choice of treatment options could be due to the fact that they may have already tried a particular Alcohol Rehabilitation or Drug Treatment Facility and failed. Various other factors can limit an individual to a specific type of drug or alcohol addiction treatment due to specific situations, and other times the individual from Polo can be open to all of the different available options.

Following substantial drops in initiation between 2002 and 2003, estimates of initiation of Ecstasy and LSD among persons aged 12 or older have increased significantly. Between 2003 and 2008, the number of Ecstasy initiates increased from 642,000 to 894,000, and the number of LSD initiates increased from 200,000 to 394,000.

The average age of first daily smoking among new daily smokers aged 12 to 49 in 2008 was 20.1 years. This was not significantly different from the average in 2007 (19.2 years).

There was a slight relationship between high rates of past year illegal drug dependence and high rates of past year cocaine use for persons aged 12 or older at the State level. Four States were ranked among the highest for both measures: District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Rhode Island.

The top fifth for average annual incidence of marijuana for persons aged 12 or older was comprised mostly of States from the West (five) and from the Northeast (four). Seven States ranked in the top fifth for marijuana incidence in the 12 or older age group also ranked in the top fifth for past month marijuana use (Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Because most initiation of marijuana takes place at age 25 or earlier (Gfroerer, Wu, & Penne, 2002), the rates of initiation in the 26 or older age group were much lower than those in the 12 to 17 and 18 to 25 age groups: 0.1, 6.6, and 6.8, respectively. Vermont had the highest rate among teens aged 12 to 17 (10.4), while New Hampshire had the highest rate among persons aged 18 to 25 (11.1). In the 12 or older age group, seven States from the South were ranked in the lowest fifth for incidence of marijuana.
