Current illegal drug use varied by race/ethnicity in 2006. Among persons aged 12 or older, the rate was lowest among Asians (3.6 percent). Rates were 13.7 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 9.8 percent for blacks, 8.9 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 8.5 percent for whites, 7.5 percent for Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 6.9 percent for Hispanics.

The rate for use of marijuana in the past year decreased from 2002 to 2008 but was stable between 2007 and 2008, while the number of persons who were dependent on or were abusing marijuana did not change significantly between 2002 and 2008 and between 2007 and 2008. However, between 2004 and 2008, the percentage and the number of persons dependent on or abusing pain relievers increased (from 0.6 to 0.7 percent and from 1.4 million to 1.7 million).

Past month heavy alcohol use also was associated with MDE in the past year in 2005. Ambien abuse should be taken very seriously and treated like any other type of substance abuse. The proper counseling needs to be obtained in order to get help for this problem and to keep it from becoming life threatening.

Amphetamine elevates cardiac output and blood pressure making it dangerous for use by patients with a history of heart disease or hypertension.

Patients will become as dependent on Methadone as they were to heroin or other opiates and suffer difficult withdrawal when finally trying to detox off of this medication.
